Note: this poem was written for mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, as the text to an art song for which I also wrote the music. I’m posting this because the last time she sang a song to which I’d written the words, people didn’t realize I was the poet and mentioned being unable to find it online.

The beauty in my

blackness isn’t open

to debate.

My life force

irrigates:

Irrepressible,

Irresistible,

undaunted,

undimmed,

unmistakable,

unashamed.

Rivulets of

royalty feed my

river of

resilience.

I’m a fountain

of fabulousness,

coursing with

charisma,

overflowing with

opulence.

The beauty in my
